Air India's Response to Pilot's Alcohol Incident: A Zero-Tolerance Policy and Safety Commitment
Air India has issued a statement regarding a recent incident involving one of its pilots, expressing deep regret and emphasizing its commitment to safety and zero-tolerance policies. On December 23, a Vancouver-Delhi flight, AI186, faced a delay at the Vancouver airport due to a concerning discovery by Canadian authorities.
The incident unfolded when a cockpit crew member was found under the influence of alcohol, prompting their immediate removal from the flight. This led to a delay as an alternate pilot was rostered to ensure the safety of the journey. Air India's spokesperson confirmed that Canadian authorities had flagged the issue, and the pilot was taken for further inquiry.
In a statement, the airline assured that the pilot's flying duties were immediately suspended during the investigation. The airline emphasized that any confirmed violation would result in strict disciplinary action, adhering to company policy. This incident highlights Air India's unwavering commitment to safety and its zero-tolerance stance on violations.
The situation came to light after Transport Canada informed Air India that the pilot had failed a breathalyzer test before the flight. In a letter dated December 24, Transport Canada emphasized that the incident violated Canadian aviation regulations and conditions outlined in Air India's foreign air operator certificate. They further requested a detailed investigation under Air India's safety management system, with a report on corrective steps due by January 26, 2026.
Additionally, Transport Canada indicated the possibility of enforcement action by Canadian authorities. The flight, operating a long-haul route with a refuelling stop due to Pakistan airspace restrictions, was initially scheduled to fly from Vancouver to Vienna with one set of pilots, followed by another crew taking over for the Vienna-Delhi leg. This incident underscores the critical importance of pilot well-being and the need for stringent measures to ensure passenger safety.
