A Dominant Performance: Cap Henry's Epic Victory in Fort Wayne
The Rumble in Fort Wayne presented a thrilling spectacle, and one driver dominated the stage.
In a historic return to the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, Cap Henry, a driver from Ohio, put on a show of sheer dominance. The 100-lap race, a distance not seen in Fort Wayne for over two decades, became Henry's playground.
Starting from pole position, Henry's car was a bullet, leading every single lap in the Burco Molding Race to 100. It was a performance of epic proportions, earning him a well-deserved $4,000 victory and his second Rumble triumph in the top division.
But here's where it gets controversial: the race was divided into three segments, with air quality breaks at specific intervals. Despite these pauses, Henry's control over the race never wavered. He fended off challenges from Russ Gamester and later Kasey Jedrzejek, who created an intense battle for second place with Henry's own car owner, Joe Liguori.
And this is the part most people miss: a late-race spin by Derek Bischak set up a green-white-checkered finish, extending the race by one lap. Yet, Henry, with ease, pulled away from Liguori, securing a dominant 0.618-second victory margin.
Henry's journey to the pole position began early in the night when he drew the No. 1 pill. He officially secured his spot by winning the Ohio Supermodified Sprint Series Dash, a moment that gave him the confidence to control the race as he did.
"I said they didn't want me starting pole and setting the pace, and now you can see why just a little bit," Henry noted.
The only moment of true tension for Henry came with 10 laps remaining. Passing a slower car, he made contact with Chris Neuenschwander's No. 3, but his skill and composure kept him in the lead with no visible damage to his car.
"I thought I was going to blow up with 30 laps to go, so I was running hard to ensure a lead if that happened," Henry admitted. "Luckily, it didn't, and we held on. This is an incredible moment for me."
Henry's victory was also an emotional one, dedicated to the late Randall 'Slim' Williams, the former team owner of Joe Liguori Racing. Henry's voice cracked with emotion, reflecting on the team's first win since Williams' passing earlier in the year.
"We lost Slim this year, and I miss him dearly. He was a big part of this team, and winning like this means a lot. I hope he's watching and proud of us," Henry said, tears welling in his eyes.
Liguori, who finished second, shared his thoughts on the race: "I've been coming here for 20 years and won a few times, but never finished second. It's great to get another one-two for the team. Racing Kasey was a challenge, and I had to use my bumpers at times. I needed that caution to catch up to Cap, but my brakes were gone by the end."
The Rumble in Fort Wayne also featured other exciting races. In the 600cc micro sprint features, John Ivy's driver, Tyler Shullick, swept both the winged and non-winged micro features, showcasing Ivy's prowess as a car owner. Shullick's weekend record stood at an impressive three-for-four, with six career Rumble wins across the two micro sprint classes.
In addition to the major classes, 16 grassroots divisions, including go-karts, quarter midgets, and mini wedges, also competed on Saturday. Dustin Heath and Weston Kudner were among the winners, with Kudner achieving a remarkable triple victory in the quarter midget divisions.
