The elementary school has embraced the challenge by implementing an English as a Second Language (ESL) program, a rarity for its size in the state. Non-Hispanic residents are also stepping up, expressing interest in starting adult Spanish classes to better communicate with their Hispanic neighbors.
This trend is not unique to Plankinton. Huron, 60 miles north, boasts the highest percentage of Hispanic residents in Beadle County. However, Plankinton's Aurora County, with a fraction of Beadle's population, follows closely behind. As rural areas embrace diversity, community members are uniting to provide essential services for those whose primary language is Spanish.
Ivan Romero, vice president of the Sioux Falls-based South Dakota Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, highlights the benefits of increased diversity. In the past, language barriers made accessing services challenging, but now, the Hispanic population includes professionals like attorneys, real estate agents, and doctors who speak Spanish. This has fostered a sense of comfort and understanding within the community.
Worship services have become a focal point for community gatherings. Herman Perez, a native of Puerto Rico, has established Iglesia Renuevo, a Spanish-language church service, in partnership with Sunnycrest United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls and the United Methodist Church of Plankinton. These services attract people from surrounding communities, with attendance ranging from 10 to 80 people.
Plankinton's welcoming atmosphere and availability of Spanish-friendly services have made it a hub for Hispanic individuals from nearby smaller towns. The town's residents are known for their hospitality, making it an attractive destination for those seeking a supportive environment.
However, immigration enforcement efforts have cast a shadow over the community. Despite some fears, these initiatives have generally fostered a sense of unity. Church services, in particular, have become safe havens for residents, offering support and a sense of belonging. Meanwhile, Hispanic-owned businesses have reported a decline in business activity due to reduced leisure outings among community members.
Romero emphasizes the importance of collaboration between Hispanic and non-Hispanic individuals, extending beyond cultural events. He believes that Hispanic individuals should be valued as integral members of the community, not just as a supplementary group. The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce continues to play a vital role in advocating for the community and supporting businesses.

Iglesia Renuevo plans to expand its reach further west, and the Hispanic community in Plankinton appreciates the support it receives.
