Toyota Highlander: Display Issues and Seatbelt Alerts - A Frustrating Experience (2026)

Toyota's Recent Display-Related Recalls: A Driver's Frustration and a Software Issue

A frustrated Toyota Highlander owner, TikTok creator Mama Green (@mamagreen007), has encountered a recurring issue with her car's display screen randomly shutting off. This problem has persisted despite multiple service visits, leaving her with a sense of helplessness. The situation has sparked a discussion among viewers, with some offering advice and sharing their own horror stories.

The display issue is not the only concern. Mama Green also faces a persistent middle row seatbelt alert that goes off nonstop while driving without passengers. This has led to multiple service visits, but no permanent solution has been found.

Toyota's Recent Recalls: Software Issues and Display Problems

Toyota has recently announced several recalls due to software issues affecting its vehicle display systems. In September, nearly 600,000 vehicles across more than a dozen popular models, including the RAV4, Highlander, and Tacoma, were recalled. The issue was with the instrument panel display, not the infotainment screen. Drivers will need to get their vehicles inspected, with some receiving software updates and others having the entire unit replaced.

The following month, Toyota recalled another 1 million vehicles across models due to a backup camera issue. A rear camera glitching out while the vehicle is in reverse could pose serious safety risks. Toyota is updating the software in affected vehicles for free.

Reddit users discussed the instrument panel recall on a thread posted to r/RAV4Club three months ago. One driver expressed hope that the recall would address a recurring issue with the infotainment display restarting every 20 seconds. However, another user clarified that the recall was specifically for the instrument panel, not the infotainment system.

How to Reboot Your Toyota Infotainment Screen

If you're experiencing issues with your infotainment system, a reboot may solve them. Steven Welch of Beaman Toyota in Nashville, Tennessee, explains that while you would traditionally have to turn off the car to reset the system, newer Toyotas offer a shortcut that lets you perform the reboot while the vehicle is still on. All you have to do is locate a button (seemingly the power button) on the left side of the infotainment screen and press and hold it for about five seconds. This should reboot the system and solve your problem.
