Tensions surrounding arms supplies to Taiwan have prompted a cautious stance from Xi Jinping during discussions with former President Trump. As Trump prepares for his anticipated visit to China in April, expressing enthusiasm for the trip, he also noted that Beijing is contemplating increasing its soybean imports from the U.S. — potentially jumping from 12 million tonnes to an impressive 20 million tonnes. In a post on Truth Social, Trump emphasized the strength of his relationship with President Xi, highlighting their mutual understanding of the importance of maintaining a positive connection.
Their last conversation took place over the phone in November, where they addressed a variety of pressing global issues such as trade relations, the ongoing conflict stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the fentanyl crisis, and notably, Taiwan. Beyond these topics, they also touched upon other significant matters including Iran's current situation and China's intentions to purchase oil and gas from the United States, as highlighted by Trump.
During their discussion about Taiwan, Xi made it clear that he sees the self-governing island as a part of China, stating that it's crucial for Beijing to protect what he calls Taiwan's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He urged the United States to approach the issue of selling arms to Taiwan with careful consideration.
This sentiment underscores the long-standing position of China regarding Taiwan, where reunification remains a priority for the Chinese government, with the possibility of force not being ruled out. The United States, which officially maintains diplomatic ties with Beijing rather than Taipei, has managed a complex relationship over the years while still standing as Taiwan's most significant arms supplier.
In December, the Trump administration made headlines with a substantial arms sale to Taiwan valued at around $11 billion, which included sophisticated weaponry such as advanced rocket launchers, self-propelled howitzers, and various missile systems. This move was met with strong rebuke from Beijing, which remarked that such actions would only exacerbate tensions and contribute to a precarious and violent atmosphere across the Taiwan Strait.
Xi pointed out during his conversation with Trump that just as the U.S. has its own apprehensions, China too has legitimate concerns. He proposed that if both nations could collaborate with a spirit of equality, respect, and mutual benefit, they might be able to find solutions to address each other's worries effectively.
Interestingly, just hours before speaking with Trump, Xi convened a virtual meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, wherein both leaders celebrated the deepening of ties between China and Russia. This development adds another layer of complexity to the geopolitical landscape, particularly in light of the ongoing discussions about Taiwan.
